Work Experience

D-Wave Systems Inc.

Senior Experimental Physicist
|

2019 - Current

D-Wave is the leader in the development and delivery of quantum computing systems, software, and services and is the world’s first commercial supplier of quantum computers.

  • Performed calibration of quantum processors. This is a process of measuring thousands of individual components of the processor and fitting the data to physical models.
  • Developed and maintained the code that performs these measurements and models
  • Designed novel devices and experiments to enable more advanced quantum processors
  • Characterized the performance of the quantum processor as well as improved understanding of the underlying physics
  • Created data visualizations and mining data for insights

D-Wave Systems Inc.

Experimental Physicst (M.Sc)
|

2015 - 2019

ThermoScience Enercoatings

Research Engineer
|

2014 - 2015

Thermoscience Enercoatings was a company that developed a manufacturing process for an electrical heating element that could be deposited onto complex surfaces with unique physical properties such as durability and conduction.

  • Automated data collection and used statistical tools to identify and characterize key relationships between manufacturing parameters and heater performance
  • Developed hardware for performance testing and characterization of materials
  • Reorganized Information Technology resources of company, deploying new web-based tools and phasing out obsolete technology and practices

McGill University

Graduate Research Assistant
|

2011 - 2013

My research was in the area of one dimensional systems, where strong electron-electron interactions conspire to create a remarkable new quantum state of matter at ultracold temperatures applicable to quantum computing.

  • Unified the lab codebase using version control to reduce duplicated effort and share instrument drivers
  • Developed software which synthesizes data from a multitude of sensors to achieve complex measurements with increased safety and efficiency on delicate semiconductor nanodevices
  • Performed data analysis using Python to isolate signals and compare experimental results with theory
  • Completed courses in advanced physics, covering complex models such a mean-field theory and Ising models

McMaster University

Undergraduate Research Assistant
|

2011 - 2011

Soft Condensed Matter Group, Supervisor — Dr. Kari Dalnoki-Veress

  • Designed, built and tested an automated 'bead crusher' to determine the mechanical properties of chemical beads intended as a new method of drug delivery
  • Delivered project under budget by reusing old parts and self-manufacturing new ones
  • Coded user-friendly LabView interface to operate apparatus and interpret measurements
  • Created documentation and provided support for subsequent end-users

McMaster University

Undergraduate Research Assistant
|

2010 - 2010

Silicon Photonics Group, Supervisor — Dr. Peter Mascher

  • Performed product research and development for Group IV Semiconductor. Created new materials using PECVD to be used in silicon-based lighting
  • Utilized statistical tools in Matlab to model parameter space, achieving accurate predictions of sample composition
  • Built a process analyzer for in situ analysis of vapour composition
  • Assisted with the installation and characterization of a high vacuum PECVD system

McMaster University

Undergraduate Research Assistant
|

2009 - 2009

Silicon Photonics Group, Supervisor — Dr. Peter Mascher

  • Developed prototype samples for electroluminscent silicon nanocrystal samples
  • Analyzed and interpreted data using Matlab
  • Developed a procedure for creating transparent contacts on thin films
  • Took initiative to refit a discarded sputtering system to operational status

Sherritt International

Production Engineering Intern
|

2008 - 2008
  • Performed data entry and analysis on well production, characterizing decline rates
  • Maintained database of daily production records on three oil fields with 40+ wells
  • Performed numerical analysis on the performance of drilling fluid additives, resulting in savings of up to $20,000 per well
