I have a reputation for being a diplomatic problem and tactful confrontation solver. I am an established manager with 15+ years’ experience in higher education. I work well with a wide-range of personalities to accomplish goals and juggle differing priorities. While I find working collaboratively to be energizing, I am also comfortable with being called upon to make a decision and take responsibility. I review projects from a risk assessment perspective and have recently discovered a knack for change management. I am a:travel enthusiast - I took my background picture at The Peace Torii of Hakone Shrine in Japan;technology nerd - my approach is best summed up as 'what does this button do?';and avid baker - I just made my first bûche de Noel for the holidays.I can be reached at juliet.duyster@gmail.com and am especially interested in opportunities located in Northern Europe.

|

Jul 2016 - Current

I oversee the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics' (ICERM) finances, grant management, visa procedures, strategic planning, human resources, and financial staff. I provide analysis and options to the Directorate for resource allocation decisions. Additionally, I work with the Directorate to design and implement diverse strategic and fundraising plans to optimize ICERM’s financial and staff resources. I represent ICERM to University administration, government agencies, board members, industrial and academic partners, and visitors. I engage University administration on our visitors' needs and problem resolutions.

  • Serve on the institute's Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan committee providing guidance on the human resources and financial aspects of the plan.

Financial Manager - ICERM
|

Aug 2011 - Jun 2016

I administered ICERM's 20+ budgets totaling over 4 million USD annually, which included balancing guidelines from multiple funding sources. I assisted the Director on an average of 3 proposals annually. I prepared monthly and annual financial reports. I assessed new plans for liability issues and provided recommendations as needed. I oversaw reimbursements for ~500 visitors, staff, and board members annually. I assisted international visitors with visas. I coordinated with other staff to keep ICERM's 13-20 annual programs and events within budget. I handled post-hire aspects of ICERM's human resource administration. I hired, trained, and managed financial staff.

  • Recognized the benefits to my department’s reimbursement process that the university's switch to Workday Financials would bring. The process was overhauled from being snail mail with paper receipts to utilizing Google Forms and scanned receipts. The form was designed to be a backend decision guide to ensure visitors complete the correct university registration form. Staff time was reduced by 15% and overall processing time was reduced by 50%.
  • Developed a method for handling buyouts of non-permanent additions to the Institute by consulting with key central offices and merging their requirements together into the final legal agreement.
  • Accurately anticipated an upcoming processing delay due to the University transitioning to Workday Financials. I crafted a plan to minimize delays and adjusted procedures in advance. My department was one of the first to begin submitting in the new system and did so with minimal errors.
  • Established the financial policies and processes for the Institute. This involved incorporating regulations from the federal government, the funding agency, the specific funding award, and the University.
  • Taught myself LaTeX basics to better assist the Director with proposal writing as it is her preferred document preparation system.
