Volunteer Bioacoustician
|

Aug 2015 - Aug 2015

I served as a volunteer bioacoustician on the NOAA Ship Reuben Lasker in the Gulf of Alaska, off of Kodiak Island. Leg 2 (August 4th - August 27th, 2015) of this Collaborative Large Whale Survey (CLaWS) focused on tracking down the highly endangered North Pacific right whale, while opportunistically collecting data on other large whales in the area. My main work entailed prepping and launching sonobuoys, identifying different vocalizations from numerous marine mammals, and determining the position of a call (DIFAR) and relaying that information to the bridge.

  • Skills acquired aboard the vessel:
  • basic use of Ishmael software and WinRadio; isolation of vocalizations to determine bearing using DIFAR
  • Identifying call types of blue whales, sperm whales, humpback whales, gray whales, fin and sei whales, killer whales, and North Pacific right whales.
  • Prepping and deployment of a sonobuoy
  • Basic identification of whale “blow” types
  • Basic operating knowledge of a crossbow used for tagging/biopsy of large whales
  • Operating on a small boat in pursuit of large whales
  • Ship safety aboard a government vessel
