Overview of the role

  • The Communications Associate is a vital support role in helping the comms team to continue positioning The Trevor Project as a leader in LGBTQ mental health and suicide prevention.
  • Reporting to a Senior Communications Manager, this role will advance Trevor’s mission via external and internal communications strategies.
  • The Communications Associate will support the larger communications team and ensure that activities move forward smoothly.
  • Frequent focus areas include media relations, media monitoring, rapid reaction to relevant news cycles, internal memos and newsletters, speaking engagements, award submissions, and public affairs.

What you’ll do

  • Manage the creation of press contact lists, ensuring they are thorough and up-to-date
  • Monitor news coverage on a daily basis and share press clips with internal stakeholders
  • Assist in the drafting and distribution of press materials, including news releases, media alerts, public statements, op-eds, and other written support as assigned
  • Assist in managing speaking engagements, including coordinating logistics and drafting talking points for speeches, conferences, panels, and interviews
  • Research, pitch, and maintain relationships with media. Schedule press interviews, coordinate film crews and credential needs, as well as update the website’s Press Room
  • As part of the Growth team, collaborate on owned marketing campaigns that promote the health and well-being of LGBTQ young people
  • Support internal and external communications needs across the organization’s departments, including Crisis Services, Research, Advocacy, Technology, and Development
  • Support communications needs from corporate partners, talent, and vendors, as needed
  • Promote the Research department’s monthly research briefs, polling data, research papers, peer-reviewed journal articles, and rollout of the organization’s annual National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health
  • Support the Advocacy & Government Affairs department’s media outreach efforts around programs supporting federal and state legislation that protect the rights of LGBTQ young people
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with third party vendors and firms in support of delivering public relations services
  • Work alongside our Senior Communications Managers to ensure internal and external communications adhere to The Trevor Project’s style guide
