    Engineering Manager

    FYI
    Worldwide

    Overview

FYI helps companies create a more productive and happier workplace through the use of technology that bridges time zones, teams and tools.

Work has become fragmented. No single app will ever provide everything a whole company needs. Each team uses their own set of tools to create, store, and share information. It’s getting worse. Self-service, freemium, and SaaS apps have given anyone the ability to easily add another app to their company. Even enterprise companies are struggling as they move to the cloud and realize that shared drives and workspaces are a thing of the past.

With this fragmentation, it’s now impossible to see what’s happening at work and to know who has access to company information. FYI brings documents, teams, and tools into a single interface that’s connected to all the software that a company uses. What You’ll Do

    • You’ll build and lead a diverse and inclusive team of engineers working on data processing infrastructure.
    • Facilitate technical research, planning, prioritization and staffing for projects
    • Collaborate across teams to plan, build, deliver, and support product features
    • Assist with code and architecture (20-40% of the time)
    • Mentor and coach to grow the talent of your team

    Who We’re Looking For

    • You’ve managed and grown high performing engineering teams
    • You’ve designed and built distributed data processing systems
    • You’re able to make decisions and think deeply, even when details are limited
    • You’ve managed fully remote, high performance engineering teams
    • You’re able to effectively balance speed/quality/tech debt and make engineering decisions that enable speed and quality results
    • You’re willing to do whatever it takes, even if this means working outside of your role (backend help frontend, frontend, handle customer support, etc)

    About Us

The FYI team has been 100% remote since day one, and distributed all over the world. Here are the principles that we embody:Customers come first

    • Obsess over customer needs. Think like a customer. Maximize customer value.

    Show up

    • Be present. Care deeply about the work. Take initiative and be an owner.

    Be decisive

    • Make smart decisions. Aim for speed. Deliver results.

    Learn, teach, and coach

    • Improve yourself. Empower others. Succeed as a team.

If you resonate with these principles and feel that you’re a fit for the Engineering Manager role, we’d love to get to know you!

    ENGINEERING MANAGER

    Summary

We are seeking experienced engineering managers to lead several teams in the Wikimedia Product Department.  These roles are full-time, 100% remote, and globa

We are seeking emotionally intelligent engineering managers who are able to craft a fulfilling work environment for each engineer.  We expect our managers to be proactive and collaborative partners with product, design, and other functions to lead effective teams where everyone is empowered to do their best work. We believe that a human-centered leadership approach is key to a high performing team, and that these two go hand-in hand.

As part of the highly distributed, worldwide, and diverse organization, you will collaborate with other teams through an environment of remote work and asynchronous communication. You will build strong working relationships with peers across functions, and help set context for team members with an eye towards the future.  As a member of our team, you'll always be challenged to solve unique and interesting problems that have real impact on how the world shares knowledge.

We use open source tools as much as possible, and always open source our own work (check out our documentation). PHP and JavaScript make up most of our code, but we value using the right tool for the job.

Our world is vast and can be complicated, so we value communication, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn as much as certificates or degrees.

We’re currently hiring engineering managers for the following teams:

Community Technology: Community Tech is a Wikimedia Foundation team running the Community Wishlist Survey. It builds and improves curation and moderation tools for experienced users, supports bot operators, and more. The team works closely with editors, volunteer developers, and other Wikimedia teams

Editing: The Editing Team works to ensure new and experienced volunteers working in 300+ languages have the tools they need to keep Wikipedia accurate and up to date. The team's main area of focus is a rich-text editor for Mediawiki that enables people to edit Wikipedia's content and communicate with other volunteers without needing to know about or interact with the wiki's markup language. While most of our schedule needs are flexible, we need a manager for this team that will be routinely available between 1pm - 3pm and 6pm - 7pm UTC

Growth: The Growth team works to help new people start editing Wikipedia by introducing new editing workflows that are a fit for more people on more devices. We build a cohesive experience for newcomers, helping them find a place in our communities, connect with others, and start contributing their knowledge.  While most of our schedule needs are flexible, we need a manager for this team that will be routinely available between 1pm - 3pm and 6pm - 9pm UTC.

Trust & Safety (T&S): The T&S Engineering Team is a new, interdisciplinary product team developing tools that help our T&S staff and the volunteer admins they work with to enforce policy, procedure, and laws across our projects and communities. This includes some light data analysis tools and some enforcement tools.

    Responsibilities

    • Model empathetic leadership and develop a supportive team environment rooted in psychological safety while ensuring that diverse voices are represented
    • Work closely with cross-functional product, design, community and other peers on the team to deliver high-quality software
    • Develop a strong two-way feedback loop where you share wider organizational context and build a deep understanding of each engineer and how they work
    • Craft a fulfilling and engaging work experience through regular career growth and development conversations
    • Participate in hiring with an eye towards diversity
    • Help create supportive on-boarding experiences for new engineers on your team
    • Iterate and improve our engineering processes and technical culture and help guide technical decision-making
    • Collaborate with other technical leaders for effective cross-team execution

    Requirements

    • Experience managing a globally distributed team
    • Proven success delivering software at scale
    • People-first philosophy that focuses on individual growth as the foundation for team success
    • Strong written communication skills as our collaboration largely happens online
    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or the equivalent in work related experience

Nice to HavesIn addition to the basic skills needed for being successful, these skills would be very valuable

    • Experience with MediaWiki development or as a contributor to Wikimedia projects
    • Understanding of the free knowledge movement
    • Experience working on cross-functional teams partnering with product managers
